PROJECTS

IN PROGRESS:
EDUCATION

Education is not free in Uganda, so all the children of schooling age need to pay 200,000 shillings a year each (that's a mere £500) in order to have an education.

We were so touched by one families story that we have decided to sponsor the four of them through their education. Their names are Marion (16 years old), Juliet (14 years old), Paul (9 years old) and Mercy (6 years old), and they suffered a tragedy that no one should have to go though. A year and a half later, and you would be amazed at how strong and close knit all four of them are, and also extremely ambitious. We hope to help them towards a better and more fulfilled life.

Another person we sponser is Ben. Ben is a 19 year old student who helped us immensely when we stayed with his family in Uganda. Dedicated to school, Ben wishes to be a true entrepreneur, and has always planned little businesses he can do to earn a living - despite everything he has faced. When he was 12 he lost his father, and now only recently his mother as well. For us we think he encompasses what we believe, in doing something sustainable to support himself and his family for years to come. This is why we are now financing him through university, as well as offering advice and support on his projects and businesses.

SIITA'S NEST

THE RAINWATER PROJECT

Currently raised: £1000

Goal fund: £2000

We are HALF WAY to being able to install the sustainable rainwater tank at Siitas nest! At the moment Siita's nest pays monthly in order to get clean drinking water, and over time this is extremely costly, but obviously an absolute essential. With a water tank they could collect rainwater, boil it and then use it to drink, and use the unboiled water for showers and washing. An investment like this will save the orphanage a substantial amount of money for the future which they could invest into education or growing their own food.

About Siita's Nest:

Siita's Nest is an orphanage found in the outskirts of Jinja, caring for 85 children all above the age of 2 to the age of 18, and continues to support over 100 children in struggling families that live locally. Siita's Nest depends entirely on donations, and like many charities does not receive support from the government.

What they need:

  • A cow for milk, COST: £625

  • 2 goats would enable more milk and breeding them will produce a sustainable meat source for the future COST: £150 for two

  • A new vehicle is required to take children to the hospital and transport food and other goods

  • Chickens (1 = £125) for meat and eggs

  • Land that the children harvest the goods such as maize, beans, tomatoes and soya used to feed the children at Siita's Nest - the rent money for it is £125 p/a

  •  Shoes: a certain type of mite known as Chiggers are rife in the villages in Jinja. They infest human skin where they lay eggs which hatch and feed on skin cells. A 3 and a half year old who came into Siita's Nest had to have 60 eggs removed from his body as he was infected so badly. Wearing soled shoes prevents this problem.

Here we believe in 'teaching to fish', so all of our projects focus on sustainable and lifelong investments.

KANGALUMIRA CLINIC

This clinic was mainly run by a group of volunteers and focused on diagnosis and treatment of diseases like malaria and HIV, with reagents and DNA samples being held in a lab. For Sue, who has worked in a lab for many years, the difference between the labs she's known and the one we saw were worlds apart, with no fridge to hold certain reagents, vaccines or hold samples for more than 24 hours.

We at Invitech could not believe that they did not even have a fridge! With a fridge they would be able to hold samples for more than a day allowing an easier testing schedule. They would be able to hold vaccines to supply to the community, and would also be able to hold many more reagents to perform a wider range of testing, such as. With a necessity that it clearly is, Invitech donated a new fridge to the clinic that was welcomed with extremely grateful arms from the main doctor, David. For such a small expense, David can now allow a huge quantity of new reagents to be held safely and securely to serve the 37 villages surrounding the clinic.

Our next project:

  • To expand the range of tests the lab can offer by providing extra equipment

  • Funding for a school on the site which would provide education for the children of the 37 villages. This is obviously a huge project and one which will need a lot of donations! More can be read on the 'Get Involved' page.
